MILLENNIUM EXPEDITION COMPETITION

The spirit of exploration and enviromental conservation, a core tenent of the Society, is as alive in this century as it was in the last. To prove it we ran a competition  during the year 2000 to find an expedition worthy of our support. Did we find it !

The results have been announced and we wish the winners the best of luck in the artic wastes. We are proud to be associated with Lukas Grobler and are sure that his incredible drive and determination will make this a first for a South African.

NORTHERN CROSS EXPEDITION 2001

The aim of the expedition is to cross the Greenland Ice Cap from East to West on the Arctic Circle by manhauling on skis a total distance of 650 kilometers without assistance from wind or machinery. The expedition will consist of two teams of 3 people who will travel unsupported from external supply and the groups will travel in isolation from each other.

During the expedition there will be a simultaneous study of physiological, psychological and behavioral data from two independent teams  in order to identify specific relationships between physiological and psychological adaptation to a polar environment.

This expedition is unique not only for the scientific rationale but in being conceived and led by a South African.

In preparation for the crossing various members undertook preparatory trips including a Glacier Climbing Course and Ski Training In Norway
