This part of the world doesn't offer an amazing variety of kloofing (also known as canyoning), however there is a hidden gem in the form of Grootkloof in the Magaliesberg.

ESSA will be running a day-trip for a limited number of participants to this beautiful kloof. It involves a moderate hike into the kloof and a fairly challenging descent down a series of rock pools where your balance and ability to remain upright will be tested.

There is also a scenic abseil off a huge boulder followed by a refreshing swim or two.

  • Friday, July 29, 2016 (All day) to Sunday, July 31, 2016 (All day)
Kayakers, Rafters and Stand Up Paddle enthusiasts take note! Ash Fest 2016 is taking place in Clarens from 29-31 July 2016.   Whitewater Training is once again hosting the annual Whitewater Kayaking Ash River Festival on the weekend of 29 to 31 July 2016 on the Ash River near Clarens in the Free State.
  • Sunday, July 10, 2016 (All day) to Saturday, July 16, 2016 (All day)
For those of you who are going to need a mid-winter pick-me-up, consider joining a group of us escaping to Cape Vidal from 10 to 16 July. It offers both bush - the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park – and a 12 km beach.   There is great snorkelling, and a whale-watching tower for spotting pods of bottlenose dolphins and – if we’re in luck – also Humpback whales on their way to breeding grounds off the Mozambique coast.   I’ve booked a log cabin for eight at R500 pp/pd, but there is also the possibility of camping (a site for 4 costs R480). Check out the details:

This beautiful small town is in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the Free State. We will be camping at the Golden Gate National Park, Glen Reenen Restcamp.   The Clarens Dinosaur Tour starts off with a talk on the geology and palaeontology of the area followed by a field trip looking for dinosaur bones from the Triassic period with Gideon Groenewald, Phd Geology; and David Groenewald, Hons Palaeontology.

This course hosted by ESSA and Hugh Du Preez seeks to educate recreational river users, kayakers, crocers, adventure racers, rafters, and tubers, in the necessary rescue strategies for everyday river use. Swiftwater Rescue deals with the identification, prevention and rescue of incidents in various whitewater hazards, starting with the ability to look after oneself and then the rescue of others. All paddlers, especially those taking less experienced paddling partners and teammates with them, need to have up-to-date, regular training in Swiftwater Rescue and First Aid.
  • Saturday, February 13, 2016 (All day)
If you are a paddling enthusiast and haven't quite mastered the all important kayak 'roll', or you want to brush up on your rolling technique, don't miss this opportunity to learn from Hugh du Preez of Whitewater Training, who will be in Joburg for the morning on Saturday, 13 February 2016.
  • Saturday, February 13, 2016 (All day)

Join us for a fairly mellow possibly (but unlikely) romantic short 2 hour paddle down the Crocodile River on Saturday afternoon 13th February. We will run the 9 km stretch from Lanseria causeway to Friday farm take out (depending on flow level of course). We will run it with ESSA 2 person crocs with a few kayakers. Please meet at Home of Chicken Pie just after the Lanseria airport turnoff on theR512 ( Malibongwe Ext) at 2 pm with suitable river clothes and shoes (no cotton) and waterproofed kit (food, water, camera, etc.).
