Experience the Highveld on horseback, as the pioneers found it in the past century. A variety of game including two of Africa’s big 5 game species are dispersed over the undulating landscape and can be viewed from up close. Over 272 bird species have been recorded on the reserve, making it the birdwatcher’s paradise. The Rietvlei Nature reserve is conveniently situated only 18 km from Pretoria’s city centre and 38 km from the O.R. Tambo airport.

The ride starts off at 4pm on Friday afternoon for a short ride to the first night hut. The evening is spent around a fire cooking dinner. Next day is a full day on horseback across the park, stopping for lunch at the picnic area and then making your way to the second hut for the evening. After breakfast on Sunday, a 2 hour ride back to the main gate. The rest of the day can be spent in the park.

The highlight of the ride is getting up close and personal to the rhinos in the park, as you can get a lot closer on horseback.
