Braam Malherbe - running the Great Wall of China

Braam Malherbe
Johannesburg Monthly Meeting
Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 19:00 to 21:30

Braam and his running partner David Grier ran the entire length of the Great Wall of China in 2006, a distance of 4,218 kms, at the pace of a marathon a day for 98 days. It was a world first which is unlikely to be repeated, given new rules which China has put into place. Two years later, after serious knee surgery and doctors warning Braam would never run again, he and David ran around South Africa, following the entire coastline from Namibia to Mozambique -- a distance of 3,278 kms.

During both adventures, Braam and David raised funds for Operation Smile, an international charity organisation providing corrective surgery for children born with cleft palate and cleft palate disfigurements.

Braam's mottos are "the greatest gift in life is giving" and "nothing is impossible if you have big dreams." He is taking the ongoing assault on South Africa's rhino population very seriously and is heading an international crusade to protect them, in line with his lifelong campaign to preserve our planet's biodervsity
