Drive to Kasese Magherita hotel
27 February Drive to Ibanda and begin our walk to Nyabitaba (2650m) At Ibanda, porters are allocated, loads distributed, you are briefed by the Wildlife Authority etc. these things take time (African time!) ; relax until everyone is ready to depart. Ensure you keep your wet weather gear with you, there are patches on the route where it is VERY wet and muddy, and you may end up with pretty wet boots this evening. Ensure your boots are waterproofed, and that you have spare lightweight shoes to wear in camp this evening, allowing your boots to dry.
Hike to John Mate hut (3415m) There are steep downhills and uphill sections. Pace yourself and ensure you eat well while you are in the lower slopes appetite diminishes at altitude.
Hike to Bujuku (3977m) There are some bogs along this route and wellies come in handy. Excellent views of Mt. Baker, Mt Speke and Mt. Stanley if clear.
Hike up to Elena hut (4543m) Those not feeling well at this altitude may choose to go to Kitandara hut and omit the peak ascent section.
Summit Margherita Peak (5109m) Summit starting at 08h00, returning to Elena hut by 15h00. Take crampons, ice axes and lots of fluid with you. Glacier crossing will involve being roped together but does not require experience or training, the guide will teach what is necessary. If all return early enough, may elect to walk on to Kitandara the same afternoon.
Hike to Lake Kitandara (4027m) This is very scenic lake.
Hike to Guy Yeoman (3506m). Look after your knees, this is a steep walk down and you still need them for some more hiking the next day!
Hike off the mountain to Ibanda then transfer to Magherita hotel. A long steep hike again today.
Drive to Kampala for rest and overnight prior to flight home.
Transfer to Entebbe airport for flight home.
