Werner Marais’s interest in bats was ignited when he studied the populations of unique insects living entirely on bat guano in caves around Gauteng for his BSc honours degree. Thereafter he did a MSc on the potential of using bats to control agricultural pests, and he is currently perusing a PhD in the ecology of cave bats. He founded Animalia in 2008 and has been consulting as a faunal specialist since then. He has conducted numerous bat specialist assessments for proposed wind farms since the emergence of this relatively new industry in South Africa. He serves on the executive and research committee of the Gauteng and Northern Regions Bat Interest Group. Lastly he is also a passionate inventor and product developer, as well as an occasional artist.
