Picture this: lovely ladies and handsome gentlemen, dressed in their finery, strolling along the lawns, sipping drinks and mingling with old and new friends whilst anticipating a scrumptious meal, welcome after a day of climbing, cycling or hiking...
It's time for ESSA's formal dinner! As is traditional, it is being held in an unusual setting. This year it's at Appin, Swinburne, a venue familiar to most for its climbing, mountain biking and hiking. Swinburne is a little village perched virtually on the edge of the Drakensberg escarpment. It goes largely unnoticed where it lies between Harrismith and Van Reenen (both more popular stops on the N3), which is a good thing considering how few little hamlets in this particularly beautiful part of South Africa can claim obscurity as an asset.
Yellowwood forests, grassy plains and typical mountain weather that can have you pulling your windbreaker on and off depending on which season strikes in which hour of the day all help contribute to a beautiful and sometimes flower strewn countryside. Rather quaintly, the Bald Ibis trail includes a 'windy corner', which can be a little difficult to negotiate should it be a windy day.
Arrive on Friday or Saturday, spend the day climbing, cycling, hiking or just lazing about, dress up in your best for Saturday evening's dinner and on Sunday, don your cricket whites for the traditional game of cricket on the lawn. If this does not whet your interest, add beautiful scenery and great company to the mix!
